Vaccinations and University Students

It is important to make sure you are up to date with your vaccinations before starting university. If you have missed a vaccine, it is important to catch up.

If you are starting university soon, as well as the routine immunisations you will have been offered as a baby and in primary and secondary school, the NHS also recommends that you should also have:

  • The MenACWY vaccine – which protects against serious infections like meningitis. You can ask your GP for this vaccine until your 25th birthday.
  • 2 doses of the MMR vaccine – as there are outbreaks of mumps and measles at universities. If you have not previously had 2 doses of MMR you can still ask your GP for the vaccine.

Further information on The NHS Vaccination Schedule is available to view on the website below:

NHS Vaccination Schedule for Students

For certain courses, it may be that further vaccinations are required by the university prior to your commencement of study. GPs are unfortunately unable to provide an occupational health service as part of their NHS responsibility.

In the first instance, we would advise you to contact your university who will be able to make arrangements with an occupational health provider for the provision of any immunisations which you may require following an appropriate assessment of the risk to which you are exposed.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter and I wish you good luck for a bright and prosperous future.

Over 40s Health Check

The NHS Health Check programme is for adults in England aged between 40 and 74. If you’re invited for an NHS Health Check you’ll be offered a series of routine tests that will help identify your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and type 2 diabetes. You can find out more about the importance of those diseases in Why these four diseases?

Why Do I Need A Health Check?

Everyone has a chance of developing heart disease, stroke, kidney disease or type 2 diabetes. NHS Health Check will help you and your GP or health professional to identify your risk earlier. You’ll then be given advice on what action you can take to lower your risk and improve your chances of a healthier life. For example, making changes to your diet or becoming more active.

How Do I Get A Health Check?

If you’re aged between 40 and 74 and haven’t already been diagnosed with heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, or had a stroke, you will be invited for your check at some time over the coming years. Local primary care trusts (PCTs) will choose who receives the check first. This means it may be some time before you’re invited. If you’re registered with a GP, you may be invited for the check by letter, or you may be offered the check when you’re at your GP or local pharmacy for another reason. If you’re not registered with a GP, it’s a good idea to register now.

If you’re concerned about your health, don’t wait until your NHS Health Check to do something about it. Go to your GP as you would normally. Adults who have already been diagnosed with one of the four diseases won’t be invited for the check, and their condition will continue to be managed as usual.

Diabetes Clinic

Diabetes is a condition which is becoming ever more common, and there is a lot that can be done to reduce the severity of any complications from this disease.

We hold Diabetic checks regularly for our Diabetic patients, and you will be sent a letter when you are due to come into the surgery to see the nurse.

If this is your first visit our nurse will arrange for you to have a blood tests to monitor your kidney function and to estimate how well your diabetes is controlled. You will also need to bring a urine sample.

The nurse will measure your blood pressure, weight, and eyesight. They will test the urine for glucose and protein and discuss the results of your home blood glucose tests, so remember to bring your results with you. They will look at the results of your blood tests and discuss those with you. They may then advise you on your progress and if necessary they can adjust your medication.
